It was in this movie Les Miserables when I first saw Geoffrey Rush. I was impressed with both the character of Javert and GR's performance in the movie (though he doesn't really do much dynamic acting).
Hmm...What can i say about Javert? Well, in the eyes of the law, he's a GOOD guy. He enforces and upholds the law right down to the last letter. He's never lied to "good" people, never drunk alcohol in his life, never hurt those who hadn't done anything wrong against the law, and he has never gotten a woman in bed O.O (yes --- and he's 52 years old). His life has been the law. And with obeying the law, comes strict discipline (whoa).
That is why it is very difficult to judge the character of Javert. In Valjean's point of view, he is EVIL. And yet, you can't deny the fact that he's just following his role as a police inspector. I think that's Javert's weakness. The LAW is the only thing that matters to him. If a principle doesn't fall under the law, then it's wrong.
*** SPOILER ***
Near the end of the movie/book, Javert actually changed his ways. Unfortunately, he committed suicide afterwards (waaaah :*() even before the start of his new life. Poor guy :(. If he only have his new life a chance, then he could have been a better dude.
